Article 12 of the Children Rights Convention states that "Children have the right to give their opinions freely on issues that affect them." (UNICEF)
To put it simply, young people have the right to be heard. Their opinions should not be overshadowed by a parent or adult.
Studies have shown that over-control over children would lead to "autonomy threat" in that the child would feel as if they are less able and trustworthy. By letting young people have a voice, they will feel much more competent and confident.
Giving young people a choice over important decisions also means they will be emotionally more stable and happier. It boosts their self-esteem and makes them feel respected and heard, contributing to good health and social relationships.
